WHAT DOES SNOHOMISH COUNTY 4-H HAVE TO OFFER?

 

Throughout the 4-H year you will be offered the opportunity to show your horse at various club and fun shows which include both performance and western games. Snohomish County 4-H also offers clinics such as reining, driving, trailer loading, colt starting, horsemanship, dressage, over fences, western games and showmanship.

EVENT DESCRIPTION
COUNTY SHOWSThe Snohomish County 4-H Horse Program offers three (3) County level shows each year for Performance (English and Western), Over Fences, Driving, Dressage and Western Games. 
GROOM SQUAD CONTEST

A fun contest where members in teams of three (3) groom and trim a horse/pony using no electric or commercial products. Each team must bring a gentle ungroomed, untrimmed horse / pony. this horse or pony will be used by another team. All teams are allowed 45 minutes to groom and trim the horse or pony using their own grooming tools which are also judged for suitability and cleanliness.

The purpose of groom Squad:

Teach proper use of grooming tools

Teach correct grooming procedures

Encourage good teamwork

Provide a fun activity

Provide an area of competition for horseless members

Contest consists of:

one member taking a written quiz

one member exhibiting the horse / pony in Showmanship

Teams's scores are based on:

Safety (25 points)

Teamwork (15 points)

Grooming (20 points)

Quiz (20 points)

showmanship (15 points) Equipment (5 points)

there is no entry fee and placing rosettes are awarded. the top Senior Team at the County Fair contest represents Snohomish County at the State 4-H Groom Squad Contest in Puyallup in September.

TRAIL HORSE CLASS IN THE FIELD ENTRY FORM

TRAINING SCHOOL

A one-day school for members in the 1st through 3rd year of the 4-H Horse Program and/or walk/trot and Novice level riders. It is held each year in the spring at the Fairgrounds in Monroe. Members bring a "safe" horse or pony to the Fairgrounds, are assigned a group and a guide (older 4-H member) and proceed through a series of classes (some with horse and some lecture) Such as:

Care of your horse

Showmanship

Equitation

Trail

Western Games

There is an option for Primary members  and horseless members to attend without a horse.

Instructors include professionals, 4-H leaders and older 4-H members. 

ADVANCED HORSEMANSHIP CLINIC

A one-day clinic for members who are regular and medal riders. Usually offered each spring at the Fairgrounds in monroe. Members bring their horse to the Fairgrounds and are offered classes such as:

Showmanship

Equitation

Trail Class

Western Games.

Classes are taught by professional instructors , judges and trainers.

HORSE JUDGING CONTEST

Members rank classes of horses (at halter and under saddle) and compare their placing to the official judge's placing. A horse judging is required in order to show a horse at Fair.

At each of the five (5) judging contests, four (4) horses are judged. The official judge gives a short explanation of how the class is to be judged. Follwoing the class and after members have marked their judging cards, the official judge gives the official placing.

Intermediate and Senior members must gve a written reason for a designated class, as to why they placed the class the way they did.

Decision-making skills

There is no entry fee and is a competition that primary and horseless members can compete in.

Scores of the highest two judging for each member are totaled to arrive at County placings. The top 20 Intermediates and top 20 Seniors are invited to the County judging finals where they must also give "oral" reasons. this score is added to the previous total to choose the top ten (10) who receive County awards and the top eight (8) who will represent Snohomish County at the State 4-H Judging Contest in Puyallup in September. The top four (4) scoring Seniors at the state contest then compete at the National 4-H Horse Judging Contest.

HIPPOLOGY

A four-phase activity with teams of four (3 is acceptable).

Phases are:

Impromptu Questions

Problem Solving

Topics are from both 4-H and non 4-H horse publications and are all horse related.

Health

Much more

Teams will work individually on the written quiz and identification, and as a team on problem solving and impromptu questions. There is no entry fee, placing rosettes are awarded and this is a competition that horseless members can compete in. Novices are also encouraged to compete and a begining level is available for new Hippology contestants. The top four (4)  Intermediates and Seniors compete at the State contest. The winning Senior team competes at the National level.

HORSE BOWL

A quiz contest with teams of four (3 is acceptable) competing. Two teams are seated at the same time and a moderator asks questions relating to horses (sources are ALL 4-H Horse Program publictions) Competition is double elimination. There is no entry fee, placing rosettes are awarded and this is a competition that horseless members can compete in. Novice contests areoffered for members new to the contest.

Senior members who win their County level Contest, may then compete for a chance to participate at the State Competition. The top Senior County Team at the State Competition may then compete at the National Contest.

YOUTH FORUM

This is a member's opportunity to make their voice heard. All Intermediate and Senior level youth in the 4-H Horse Program are invited to participate in the Youth Forum which is scheduled quarterly (usually after each county show). The youth discuss all aspects of the Snohomish County 4-H Horse Program and make recommendations to the program for additions and changes. Let Snohomish County 4-H Horse program know what works, what doesn't and what you would like to see added or changed.Bring your positive attitude and good ideas.

Youth who attend two of the four Youth Forums per year will be recognized at the County Year End Awards with a pin the first year, and a certificate each year thereafter.

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Snohomish County 4-H Horse program annually awards five (5) $1000 academic scholarships to County members who are either in their last year of the 4-H program or applying  / accepted into their first year of postsecondary education. Applicants must have been members of the County 4-H Horse Program a minimum of three (3) years and be currently participating as a member.

Scholarships are for any institution accredited by regular acreditation agencies.

HORSES FOR CLEAN WATER

Members can earn achievement patches by completing the various tours, workshops, and activities.

Members learn about environmentally sensitive horse keeping practices, which benefit the horse by providing a better place to live, benefit your wallet by cutting waste, and benefit your conscience by limiting the impact of horse keeping on your local environment.
